Eric R. Holz, MD, FACS

Doctor Eric Holz was born and raised in Austin, Texas. He graduated from the University of Texas at Austin with Highest Honors and was inducted into Phi Beta Kappa. He completed medical school at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Texas then stayed at Baylor for a transitional internship and ophthalmology residency at the Cullen Eye Institute under the supervision of Dr. Dan B. Jones. Following completion of his residency, Dr. Holz undertook a fellowship in medical and surgical diseases of the retina and vitreous at the University of Oklahoma’s Dean A. McGee Eye Institute with Dr. David Parke II.
Following his subspecialty training, Dr. Holz practiced for three years at Retina and Vitreous Associates of Kentucky in Lexington. He was recruited back to the faculty at Baylor and Dr. Holz has been on the full-time faculty for the past 12 years. During that time, he was promoted to Associate Professor of Ophthalmology with tenure and Chief of the Surgical Retina Service.
He has trained over 20 retina fellows and 75 ophthalmology residents to become retina specialists. Dr. Holz has been an active researcher with over 60 publications covering a wide range of retinal conditions. He has a special interest in diseases affecting the macula, in particular, epiretinal membrane, vitreomacular traction syndrome, macular hole and macular degeneration. Dr. Holz also treats pediatric patients through RVT’s Houston Pediatric Retina clinic.
Dr. Holz is a board certified retina specialist and belongs to many esteemed ophthalmological societies like the American Society of Retina Specialists, the American Board of Ophthalmology, and the American Academy of Ophthalmology. Dr. Holz is honored yearly as a Super Doctor since 2007.
Dr. Holz is known as the “doctor with boots” due to his sartorial quirk of constantly wearing boots with his scrub attire. He enjoys any outdoor activity, but particularly working in the yard, hiking, hunting and fishing. He has been married for over 20 years to Dr, Joyce Holz, one of Houston’s leading gynecologic surgeons. They have one son, Clayton, who has recently graduated from Stanford University and is working hard at keeping his parents tech-savvy.
